We construct a pathwise formulation for a multi-type age-structuredpopulation dynamics, which involves an age-dependent cell replication andtransition of gene- or phenotypes. By employing the formulation, we derive avariational representation of the stationary population growth rate; therepresentation comprises a trade-off relation between growth effects and asingle-cell intrinsic dynamics described by a semi-Markov process. Thisvariational representation leads to a response relation of the stationarypopulation growth rate, in which statistics on a retrospective history work asthe response coefficients. These results contribute to predicting andcontrolling growing populations based on experimentally observed cell-lineageinformation.
