From numerical simulations, we show that non-rotating magnetohydrodynamicshear flows are unstable to finite amplitude velocity perturbations and becometurbulent, leading to the growth and sustenance of magnetic energy, includinglarge scale fields. This supports the concept that sustained magnetic energyfrom turbulence is independent of the driving mechanism for large enoughmagnetic Reynolds numbers.
