A novel two-leaflet description of lipid membranes is proposed. Within itsframework, phase separation phenomena in multicomponent biological membranesare analyzed. As we show, interactions between the leaflets tend to suppressmacroscopic phase segregation (i.e., complete demixing of lipids) in suchsystems. Instead, microphase separation characterized by formation ofequilibrium nanoscale domains can take place. The phase diagram is constructedand numerical simulations revealing nanostructures of different morphology areperformed.
