Large fluctuations have received considerable attention as they encodeinformation on the fine-scale dynamics. Large deviation relations known asfluctuation theorems also capture crucial nonequilibrium thermodynamicalproperties. Here we report that, using the technique of uniformization, thethermodynamic large deviation functions of continuous-time Markov processes canbe obtained from Markov chains evolving in discrete time. This formulationoffers new theoretical and numerical approaches to explore large deviationproperties. In particular, the time evolution of autonomous and non-autonomousprocesses can be expressed in terms of a single Poisson rate. In this way theuniformization procedure leads to a simple and efficient way to simulatestochastic trajectories that reproduce the exact fluxes statistics. Weillustrate the formalism for the current fluctuations in a stochastic pumpmodel.
