We study pulse propagation in one-dimensional tapered chains of sphericalgranules. Analytic results for the pulse velocity and other pulse features areobtained using a binary collision approximation. Comparisons with numericalresults show that the binary collision approximation provides quantitativelyaccurate analytic results for these chains.
