We study the heartbeat activity of healthy individuals at rest and duringexercise. We focus on correlation properties of the intervals formed bysuccessive peaks in the pulse wave and find significant scaling differencesbetween rest and exercise. For exercise the interval series is anticorrelatedat short time scales and correlated at intermediate time scales, while for restwe observe the opposite crossover pattern -- from strong correlations in theshort-time regime to weaker correlations at larger scales. We suggest aphysiologically motivated stochastic scenario to explain the scalingdifferences between rest and exercise and the observed crossover patterns.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
