We study the dynamics of scroll vortices in excitable reaction-diffusionsystems analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that intrinsicthree-dimensional instability of a straight scroll leads to the formation ofhelicoidal structures. This behavior originates from the competition betweenthe scroll curvature and unstable core dynamics.
