The emerging field of self-driven active particles in fluid environments hasrecently created significant interest in the biophysics and bioengineeringcommunities owing to their promising future biomedical and technologicalapplications. These microswimmers move autonomously through aqueous media whereunder realistic situations they encounter a plethora of external stimuli andconfining surfaces with peculiar elastic properties. Based on a far-fieldhydrodynamic model, we present an analytical theory to describe the physicalinteraction and hydrodynamic couplings between a self-propelled activemicroswimmer and an elastic interface that features resistance toward shear andbending. We model the active agent as a superposition of higher-order Stokessingularities and elucidate the associated translational and rotationalvelocities induced by the nearby elastic boundary. Our results show that thevelocities can be decomposed in shear and bending related contributions whichapproach the velocities of active agents close to a no-slip rigid wall in thesteady limit. The transient dynamics predict that contributions to thevelocities of the microswimmer due to bending resistance are generally morepronounced than to shear resistance. Our results provide insight into thecontrol and guidance of artificial and synthetic self-propelling activemicroswimmers near elastic confinements.
