Stick-slip motion, a common phenomenon observed during crawling of cells, isfound to be strongly sensitive to the substrate stiffness. Stick-slipbehaviours have previously been investigated typically using purely elasticsubstrates. For a more realistic understanding of this phenomenon, we propose atheoretical model to study the dynamics on a viscoelastic substrate. Our modelbased on a reaction-diffusion framework, incorporates known importantinteractions such as retrograde flow of actin, myosin contractility, forcedependent assembly and disassembly of focal adhesions coupled withcell-substrate interaction. We show that consideration of a viscoelasticsubstrate not only captures the usually observed stick-slip jumps, but alsopredicts the existence of an optimal substrate viscosity corresponding tomaximum traction force and minimum retrograde flow which was hithertounexplored. Moreover, our theory predicts the time evolution of individual bondforce that characterizes the stick-slip patterns on soft versus stiffsubstrates. Our analysis also elucidates how the duration of the stick-slipcycles are affected by various cellular parameters.
