We show that the controversies on the gauge dependence and the infraredsingularity emerged in the generalized factorization approach for nonleptonicheavy meson decays within the framework of the operator product expansion canbe resolved by perturbative QCD factorization theorem. Gauge invariance of thedecay amplitude is maintained under radiative corrections by assuming on-shellexternal quarks. For on-shell external quarks, infrared poles in radiativecorrections have to be extracted using the dimensional regularization. Thesepoles, signifying nonperturbative dynamics of a decay process, are absorbedinto bound-state wave functions. Various large logarithms produced in radiativecorrections are summed to all orders into the Wilson and Sudakov evolutionfactors. The remaining finite part gives a hard subamplitude. A decay rate isthen factorized into a convolution of the hard subamplitude, the Wilsoncoefficient, and the Sudakov factor with the bound-state wave functions, all ofwhich are well-defined and gauge invariant.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures.
