A supersymmetric extension of the $U(1)\times U(1)^{\prime }$-Higgs bosonicsuperconducting cosmic string model is considered,and the constraints imposedupon such a model due to renormalizability, supersymmetry, and gauge invarianceare examined. For a simple model with a single $U(1)$ chiral superfield and asingle $% U(1)^{\prime }$ chiral superfield, the Witten mechanism for bosonicsuperconductivity (giving rise to long range gauge fields outside of thestring) does not exist. The simplest model that can accommodate the requisiteinteractions requires five chiral supermultiplets. This superconducting cosmicstring solution is investigated.Comment: 17 pages, revtex, no figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.
