We propose an experimental scheme to search for galactic halo axions withmass $m_a \sim 10^{-3}$eV, which is above the range accessible with cavitytechniques. The detector consists of a large number of parallel superconductingwires embedded in a material transparent to microwave radiation. The wirescarry a current configuration which produces a static, inhomogeneous magneticfield $\vec{B}_0(\vec{x})$ within the detector volume. Axions which enter thisvolume may convert to photons.
