This work aims at investigating the projectile binding energy influence on the reaction dynamics, introducing\udnew results and new data analysis methods in order to overcome some typically encountered problems, such\udas the identification of reaction products differing by few mass units and the discrimination of direct reaction\udprocesses. The\ud17\udO\ud+\ud58\udNi collision was studied at five near-barrier energies employing a compact experimental\udsetup consisting of four double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSSDs). Different reaction processes, namely the\udelastic and inelastic scattering and the 1\udn\udstripping, were discriminated by means of a detailed analysis of the\udexperimental energy spectra based on Monte Carlo simulations. The elastic scattering angular distributions were\udinvestigated within the framework of the optical model using Woods-Saxon and double-folding potentials. The\udtotal reaction cross sections were extracted and the reduced cross sections compared with those obtained for\ud17\udF\ud(\udS\udp\ud=\ud0\ud.\ud600 MeV), the mirror nucleus of\ud17\udO\ud(\udS\udn\ud=\ud4\ud.\ud143 MeV), and for the tightly bound\ud16\udO\udprojectile. The\ud17\udO\ud+\ud58\udNi total reaction cross sections were larger than those for\ud16\udO\udon the same target at the lowest energies\udstudied, becoming identical, within errors, as the incident energy increased above the Coulomb barrier.
