Isotopic cross sections of all projectile residues with Z above 23 producedin collisions induced by 238U at 1 A GeV on deuterium have been measured. Theisotopic distributions reflect the role of evaporation and fission in theformation process of these nuclei. The comparison of the measured crosssections with Monte-Carlo de-excitation codes including an analyticaldescription of the dynamics of fission shows the sensitivity of the data tonuclear dissipation. Moreover, the large excitation-energy range covered inthis experiment together with the high accuracy of the measured cross sectionsallowed to clearly separate and quantify the role of transient andquasi-stationary dissipative effects in the fission-decay width.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
