Fully quantal calculations of the total reaction cross sections \sigR andinteraction cross sections \sigI, induced by stable and unstable He, Li, C andO isotopes on $^{12}$C target at $E_{\rm lab}\approx 0.8$ and 1 GeV/nucleonhave been performed, for the first time, in the distorted wave impulseapproximation (DWIA) using the microscopic \emph{complex} optical potential andinelastic form factors given by the folding model. Realistic nuclear densitiesfor the projectiles and $^{12}$C target as well as the complex $t$-matrixparameterization of free nucleon-nucleon interaction by Franey and Love wereused as inputs of the folding calculation. Our \emph{parameter-free} folding +DWIA approach has been shown to give a very good account (within 1--2%) of theexperimental \sigI measured at these energies for the stable, strongly boundisotopes. With the antisymmetrization of the dinuclear system properly takeninto account, this microscopic approach is shown to be more accurate than thesimple optical limit of Glauber model that was widely used to infer the nuclearradii from the measured \sigI. Therefore, the results obtained for the nuclearradii of neutron-rich isotopes under study can be of interest for furthernuclear structure studies
