The light cone QCD sum rules are derived for the $\pi NN$ coupling $g_{\piNN}$ and $\pi NN(1535)$ coupling $g_{\pi NN^\ast}$. The contribution from theexcited states and continuum is subtracted cleanly through double Boreltransformation. We first improve the original sum rule for $g_{\pi NN}$ anddetermine the value of the pion wave function at the middle point $\phi_\pi(u_0 ={1\over 2})=(1.5\pm 0.2)$ at $\mu =1$GeV, which is a fundamentalnonperturbative quantity like the quark condensate. Our calculation shows thatthe $\pi N N(1535)$ coupling is strongly suppressed.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
