Neutrino-nucleus cross sections for the detection of atmospheric neutrinosare calculated in relativistic impulse and random phase approximations. Pionproduction is estimated via inclusive Delta-hole nuclear excitations. Thenumber of pion events can confuse the identification of the neutrino flavor. Asa further source of pions we calculate coherent pion production (where thenucleus remains in the ground state). We examine how these nuclear structureeffects influence atmospheric neutrino experiments and study possibleimprovements in the present detector simulations.Comment: LaTeX file, 15 pages + 4 figures (postscript), submitted to Phys.
