Plastic deformation of metallic glasses performed well below the glasstransition temperature leads to the formation of shear bands as a result ofshear localization. It is believed that shear banding originates fromindividual stress concentrators having quadrupolar symmetry. To elucidate theunderlying mechanisms of shear band formation, microstructural investigationswere carried out on sheared zones using transmission electron microscopy. Herewe show evidence of a characteristic signature present in shear bandsmanifested in the form of sinusoidal density variations. We present ananalytical solution for the observed post-deformation state derived fromcontinuum mechanics using an alignment of quadrupolar stress fieldperturbations for the plastic events. Since we observe qualitatively similarfeatures for three different types of metallic glasses that span the entirerange of characteristic properties of metallic glasses, we conclude that thereported deformation behavior is generic for all metallic glasses, and thus hasfar-reaching consequences for the deformation behavior of amorphous solids ingeneral.
