This work studies the limits of far and near-field electromagnetic responseof sub-wavelength scatterers, like the unitary limit and of losslessscatterers, and the ideal absorption limit of lossy particles. These limitbehaviors are described in terms of analytic formulas that approximate finitesize effects while rigorously including radiative corrections. This analysispredicts the electric and/or magnetic limit responses of both metallic anddielectric nanoparticles while quantitatively describing near-fieldenhancements.
