We investigate a periodic array of aluminum nanoantennas embedded in alight-emitting slab waveguide. By varying the waveguide thickness wedemonstrate the transition from weak to strong coupling between localizedsurface plasmons in the nanoantennas and refractive index guided modes in thewaveguide. We experimentally observe a non-trivial relationship betweenextinction and emission dispersion diagrams across the weak to strong couplingtransition. These results have implications for a broad class of photonicstructures where sources are embedded within coupled resonators. Fornanoantenna arrays, strong vs. weak coupling leads to drastic modifications ofradiation patterns without modifying the nanoantennas themselves, therebyrepresenting an unprecedented design strategy for nanoscale light sources.
