We present first-principles calculations for quasiparticle excitations insodium and lithium including the effects of charge and spin fluctuations. Weemploy the Overhauser-Kukkonen form for the electron self energy arising fromspin fluctuations and demonstrate that the coupling of electrons to spinfluctuations gives an important contribution to the quasiparticle lifetime, butdoes not significantly reduce the occupied bandwidth. Including correlationeffects beyond the random-phase approximation in the screening from chargefluctuations yields good agreement with experiment.
