We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments performedwith triple-axis spectrometers to investigate the low-temperature collectivedynamics in the ordered phase of uranium dioxide. The results are in excellentagreement with the predictions of mean-field RPA calculations emphasizing theimportance of multipolar superexchange interactions. By comparing neutronscattering intensities in different polarization channels and at equivalentpoints in different Brillouin zones, we show the mixedmagneto-vibrational-quadrupolar character of the observed excitations. The highenergy resolution afforded by the cold triple-axis spectrometer allowed us tostudy in detail the magnon-phonon interaction giving rise to avoided crossingsalong the $[00\xi]$ reciprocal space direction.
