We have determined the magnetic structure of the low-temperatureincommensurate phase of multiferroic YMn2O5 using single-crystal neutrondiffraction. By employing corepresentation analysis, we have ensured fullcompliance with both symmetry and physical constraints, so that the electricalpolarization must lie along the b axis, as observed. The evolution of the spincomponents and propagation through the commensurate-incommensurate phaseboundary points unambiguously at the exchange-striction mechanism as theprimary driving force for ferroelectricity.
