A mean field approximation of a model for double perovskites that takes intoaccount the coupling between itinerant electron spins and localized spins isdeveloped. As in previously reported theoretical results, and contrary toexperimental observation, the critical temperature is suppressed for largeelectron density. An effective Heisenberg model reveals the cause of thisdiscrepancy: the competition between degenerate antiferromagnetic andferromagnetic channels. This degeneracy can be broken by the inclusion of aHubbard-type U term. It is therefore suggested that electron correlationeffects need to be incorporated in the minimal model of double perovskites inorder to explain the experimental observation of increasing ferromagneticcritical temperature with increasing electron doping.Comment: 8 pages, including 4 figure
