The optical responses of structured array of noble-metal nanoparticle dimersimmersed in a glass matrix are investigated theoretically, motivated by therecent experimental observation of the splitting of the surface plasmon bandsin silver arrays. To capture the strong electromagnetic coupling between thetwo approaching particles in a silver dimer, the spectral representation of themultiple image formula has been used, and a semiclassical description of thesilver dielectric function is adopted from the literature. The splitting ofplasmon resonance band of the incident longitudinal and transverse polarizedlight is found to be strongly dependent on the particle diameter and theirseparation. Our results are shown in accord with the recent experimentalobservation. Moreover, a large redshift for the longitudinal polarization canbe reproduced. The reflectivity spectrum is further calculated for a dilutesuspension of dimer arrays.Comment: RevTeX, eps figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
