Charge, spin, as well as lattice instabilities are investigated in isolatedor weakly coupled chains of correlated electrons at quarter-filling. Ouranalysis is based on extended Hubbard models including nearest neighborrepulsion and Peierls coupling to lattice degrees of freedom. While treatingthe electronic quantum fluctuations exactly, the lattice structure is optimizedself-consistently. We show that, generically, isolated chains undergoinstabilities towards coexisting charge density waves (CDW) and bond orderwaves (BOW) insulating spin-gapped phases. The spin and charge gaps of theBOW-CDW phase are computed.
