A numerical study is made of current distributions in finite-width Hall barswith disorder and some theoretical observations are verified. The equilibriumcurrent and the Hall current are substantially different in distribution. It isobserved that in the Hall-plateau regime the Hall current tends to concentratenear the sample edges while it diminishes on average in the sample interior asa consequence of localization. The edge states themselves scarcely affect boththe equilibrium and Hall currents in the plateau regime. The sample edgecombines with disorder to efficiently delocalize electrons near the edge whilethe Hall field competes with disorder to delocalize electrons in the sampleinterior. A possible mechanism is suggested for the breakdown of the quantumHall effect.Comment: 10 pages, Revtex, 10 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
