The influence of long-range Coulomb interactions on the properties ofone-dimensional (1D) strongly correlated electron systems in vicinity of themetal-insulator phase transition is considered. It is shown that unscreenedrepulsive Coulomb forces lead to the formation of a 1D Wigner crystal in themetallic phase and to the transformation of the square-root singularity of thecompressibility (characterizing the commensurate-incommensurate transition) toa logarithmic singularity. The properties of the insulating (Mott) phase dependon the character of the short-wavelength screening of the Coulomb forces. For asufficiently short screening length the characteristics of the chargeexcitations in the insulating phase are totally determined by the Coulombinteraction and these quasipartic les can be described as quasiclassicalCoulomb solitons.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX, G{\"o}teborg preprint APR 94-3
