The coexistence of different ferroelectric phases enables the tunability ofthe macroscopic properties and extensive applications from piezoelectrictransducers to nonvolatile memories. Here we develop a thermodynamic model topredict the stability and low-energy orientations of boundaries betweendifferent phases in ferroelectrics. Taking lead zirconate titanate and bismuthferrite as two examples, we demonstrate that the low-energy orientations ofinterphase boundaries are largely determined by minimizing the electrostaticand elastic energies. Phase-field simulations are employed to analyze thecompetition between the interfacial energy and the electrostatic and elasticenergies. Our simulation results demonstrate that the lowering of crystalsymmetry could occur due to the electrical and mechanical incompatibilitiesbetween the two phases, which can be used to explain the experimentallyobserved low-symmetry phases near morphotropic phase boundaries. Our workprovides theoretical foundations for understanding and controlling theinterphase boundaries in ferroelectric materials for multifunctionalapplications.
