Using transition-metal dichalcogenides as an example, we show that thequantum interference arising in two- and three-photon absorption processes canlead to controllable, highly localized carrier distributions in the Brillouinzone. We contrast this with the previously studied one- and two-photonabsorption, and find qualitatively different features, including changes in therelevance of interband and intraband processes according to the excitationenergy. Thus, the distribution of excitations arising under certaincircumstances in two- and three-photon absorption can facilitate the study offar-from-equilibrium states that are initially well localized in crystalmomentum space.
