The Dicke model consisting of an ensemble of two-state atoms interacting witha single quantized mode of the electromagnetic field exhibits azero-temperature phase transition at a critical value of the dipole couplingstrength. We propose a scheme based on multilevel atoms and cavity-mediatedRaman transitions to realise an effective Dicke system operating in the phasetransition regime. Output light from the cavity carries signatures of thecritical behavior which is analyzed for the thermodynamic limit where thenumber of atoms is very large.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure
