The hyperfine structures of five optical lines of 65hour radioiictive Hg/ sup 197/ and 25-hour isomeric Hg/sup 197*/ were measured. Riidioactive mercury produced by- cyclotron bombardment and excited in electrodeless discharge tubes containing as few as 5 x 10/sup 12/ atoms, free of natural mercunry, gave adequate light intensities. The analysis of the hyperfine structure confirmed the magnetic dipole moment and isotope shift of Hg/sup 197/ in its ground state (I =1/2), and gave the following values for Hg/sup 197*/ (based on I=13/2): mu / sub 197*/=-l.04 plus or minus 0.0l nm; Q/sub 197*/=(1.5 plus or minus 0.3) x 10/ sup -24/ cm/sup 2/; isotope shift displacement (from Hg/sup 198/ in the 2537 A line) + 70 plus or minus 7 x l0/sup -3/ cm/sup -1/. Thus an isomeric shift of atomic energy levels resulting from the excitation of the nucleus from its ground state I = 1/2 to the isomeric state I = 13/2 is observed.
