All new names of species, genera and other taxonomic ranks of prokaryotes submitted for publication in the IJSEM, either in original articles or in the Validation Lists based on effective publication elsewhere, are checked for correctness based on the requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (Parker et al., 2016) and its Appendix 9: Orthography (Trüper & Euzéby, 2009). In recent years the number of new validly published species and genus names approached 700 and 100 annually, respectively, and these numbers are expected to increase in the coming years.
