SUMMARY Of eleven virus-specific antigens detected in cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 1, six have been shown to be type specific, i.e. not present in cells infected with type 2 virus. Two of the five type common antigens are also present in cells infected with pseudorabies virus. Electron microscopic studies of immune agglutina- tion of virus particles have shown that both naked and enveloped particles possess type specific and type common antigenic determinants on their surface. Further, one of the type common determinants on the naked particle surface interacted with antiserum to pseudorabies virus.
