The densities, viscosities, and electrical conductivities of solutions in the system phenol-water have been measured over the whole range of miscibility at 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60°, and 70°C. It has been shown that at each temperature the variation of each of these properties with composition of the mixture is quite continuous and gives no indication of the presence in solution of phenol-hemihydrate. On the contrary, the constants in the equations expressing the variation of each of these properties with temperature, when plotted against the composition, exhibit marked inflexions at the concentration corresponding to equimolecular proportion of the two constituents. This is attributed to inter-ionization of the two substances through the transfer of a hydrogen ion from a molecule of one component to a molecule of the other.
