Madam President, honored guests, and colleagues, I am indeed honored to be selected for this award. Being included with all of the notable people who have given this lecture is truly humbling. Unfortunately, the excitement of being selected was quickly replaced with feelings of concern when I read the guidelines for this lecture and realized that I was expected to talk about my contributions to physical therapy. I wondered how I could do that for 45 minutes without being either boring or terribly creative. So I quickly consulted with a colleague for whom I have great respect, Florence Kendall, the 1980 McMillan Lecturer. She said, “That is ridiculous, you cannot talk about yourself.”…
