Intellectual disability (ID) is a lifelong, debilitating condition affecting 2% to 3% Canadians (1). It is defined by deficits in cognitive functioning (IQ 2 developmental domains, eg, fine/gross motor skills, speech and interaction) (2,3). In Canada, approximately 7600 to 11,500 children are born with GDD annually (1). In the present commentary, the term ID will be used to refer to ID/GDD.
