This article engages with the work of three international legal theorists (Kennedy, Orford and Mutua) on the question of human rights and argues that whilst each provides a critique, each also makes a redemptive return to human rights. The article maps and critiques this tendency in contemporary international legal thought. I wish only to draw attention to the tension between (a) expanding the existing normative concepts of citizenship, recognition, and rights to accommodate and overcome contemporary impasses, and (b) the call for alternative vocabularies grounded in the conviction that the normative discourses derived from liberalism ... are inadequate to the task of grasping both new subject formations and new forms of social and political antagonism. 1
