The presiding genius of the first of the biennial conferences on literature and theology, held in 1982 was Ulrich Simon. For him Christian theology after Auschwitz was impossible, for forgiveness was, finally, an impossibility. It was only through literature that salvation might again be sought and once more embraced. We were seeking a form of theological humanism, with ancient roots but utterly contemporary imperatives, seeking to retrieve a theological sense of being human after the twentieth century.
