In 1728 the Saxon elector Frederic Augustus the Strong acquired a private collection of more than 10,000 drawings which became the foundation of the Dresden  Kupferstich-Kabinett . The print room itself developed out of the  Kunstkammer  which had been founded in 1560 and was dissolved at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The present article focuses on the systematization of this private collection, assembled by Gottfried Wagner in Leipzig, and the alterations it underwent on the occasion of its transfer to the Dresden print room. New archive material sheds light on the activities of collecting and arranging drawings during a period of increasing scientific erudition.
