A simple UV spectrophotometric technique was developed for rapid estimation of aspirin in complex tablet formulations. The method is based on measurement of the change in absorbance at 302 nm due to formation of salicylic acid during hydrolysis of aspirin in 0.09N NaOH. The change in absorbance follows a linear relationship with aspirin concentration in the range of 10–50 μg/mL. The method was applied to various complex tablet formulations. Recoveries of aspirin from these formulations, excipients, additives, and active ingredients confirmed the applicability of the method to complex aspirin formulations.
