Mixed sexes of Phormia reqina, reared in the laboratory on artificial medium, were maintained continuously from emergence. On each day of fly age 0 to 5, 20-50 (mean, 33) females of one group were treated topically with 1 m|i acetone or 10% juvenoid in acetone (100 mμ/fly) and caged with an equal number of untreated males. Five juvenoids were tested. Dead flies were removed daily, sexed, and counted. Fecundity was estimated volumetrically from the eggs collected daily through day 14 and preserved in 70% ethyl alcohol. Hatchability was calculated after overnight incubation of 100 eggs sampled on each of 3 or 4 days before preservation in alcohol. The neonate larvae were grown on rearing medium for 5 days, and the number of 3rd instars was determined. The tests were conducted at the Insect Reproduction Laboratory between Jan. 1980 and Feb. 1982. Each test was replicated two to four times. Standard statistical procedures were used.
