To evaluate the effectiveness of stubble-applied pesticides for potato leafhopper control, a randomized block experiment was conducted in Blacksburg, Va., in a 4-yr-old stand of alfalfa during the 3rd regrowth. Seven treatments with 45 by 45-ft plots were each replicated 4 times. Materials were applied one day after alfalfa harvest 21 July in 25 gal water/acre at 18 lb/in2 using a CO2-powered backpack sprayer equipped with a 6-ft boom. Potato leafhoppers were sampled using a 15-in. diam. sweep-net, with each sample consisting of 10 pendular sweeps. Two samples were taken in each plot on each sampling date, and insects were counted in the field as they emerged from the sweep-net. Three stem lenghts of alfalfa were also measured in each plot on each sampling date. Data were transformed using square root (X + 0.5) before statistical analysis.
