A randomized block design with 50 ft x 50 ft plots replicated 3 times was used to evaluate insecticide effects on potato leafhopper and nabids in an established alfalfa stand near Christiansburg, VA. Insecticides were applied to 9 inch tall 3rd cutting alfalfa Aug 3 using a hand-carried, CO2-powered boom sprayer at 18 psi and 25 gal water/A. A sample unit consisted of 10 pendular sweeps of a 15 inch dia sweep net with the insects counted in the field as they emerged from the net after each sample. Three samples were taken in each replicate, for a total of 9 samples/treatment. Pre-spray relative density estimates of 18 potato leafhopper adults and 1.7 nabids per 10 sweeps were obtained. Pre-treatment counts of potato leafhopper nymphs were not taken.
