Preplant Systemic Insecticides for Alfalfa Establishment, 1979

Furadan was applied as soil-incorporated, preplant treatments to assess me benefit of using systemic insecticides in alfalfa establishment. Experiments were conducted at the Rosemount Agricultural Experiment Station, Rosemount, Minnesota on Waukegan silt loam. Treatments were applied May 15 to plots 42 × 42 ft (0.04 acre) randomized in a complete block design with 5 replications. Granular applications were made by an Ortho-Whirlybird manual spreader, spray applications were made by tractor-drawn boom sprayer in 20 gal/acre at 50 psl. A seeding rate of 10 lb/acre was used. Insect populations were sampled twice by vacuum machine (15 "put-down" of an 8-in dia vacuum hose, equivalent to a sample area of ca 0.4m /plot). Stand counts were taken twice, June 19 and July 17 (10 1-sq ft samples/plot).
