Insecticides were applied May 10‘78 to a 3 year old stand of Saranac AR alfalfa in Montgomery Co., Virginia. On the treatment date the alfalfa height was 14.3 inch (S.E. = 0.46). Spray volume was 20 gal/a. Spray water pH was 7.4. Air temperature ranged from 13-16°C with R.H. of 60% and wind speed 2-6 mph. Treatments were replicated 4 times in 25 ft x 25 ft plots selected on a completely random manner. Furadan 4F at 0.5 lb/a was used as a standard treatment for comparison. Samples consisted of 15 pendulum sweeps per plot using a 15 inch net. Insect counts were transformed to log (X + I) prior to statistical analysis. Yield samples were taken using a flail forage harvester which cut and bagged the forage from a 3 ft x 25 ft swath per plot. The green yield was weighed in the field; with a subsample taken, weighed, dried, and reweighed to determine dry weight yield. Soil pH was 5.8, calcium level was medium, magnesium between low and medium, phosphate high, and potassium between medium and high.
