Three herds (60-120 head per herd) of Angus cattle (cow-calf, or yearling heifers) located at the Wye Research and Education Center, Queenstown, MD, were tagged with one of three ear tag formulations. On 19 May each of the herds was tagged (2 tags per head) with either Cutter Gold tags, experimental tags containing 10% cyfluthrin, or experimental tags containing 5% cyfluthrin and 30% piperonyl butoxide (PBO). A herd consisting of 10 yearling heifers served as untreated controls. Fly density was determined by making biweekly counts on all cattle in the untreated herd and on 15 head in the treated herds. Counts were made of face flies/face, horn flies/animal, and stable flies per front legs. One pretreatment (18 May) and 10 posttreatment counts were made.
