Control of Soybean Insect Pests with Pounce, 1987

Pounce 3.2EC was evaluated to determine its efficacy in controlling velvetbean caterpillars, threecornered alfalfa hoppers, and grasshoppers in soybean. Soybeans were planted on 1 Jun at the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton. An Agrotec 100-gal spray rig with a 30-ft boom was mounted to a Ford 6610 tractor. The sprayer was calibrated to deliver 35 gal/acre of formulation it 55 psi using flat-fan 8004 nozzles. Pounce was applied at 2 oz of formulated material/acre (0.05 lb [AI]/acre) on 21 Sep. Each of 2 fields was partitioned into 4 replications 30 ft wide and extending the length of the field (about 0.5 acres each). A 6-row (18-ft) untreated border was between each replicate. The Pounce treatment was evaluated 2 and 7 days after application by comparing the number of insect pests/25 sweeps (using a 15-inch-diam sweep net) in the treated plots to those in the middle 2 untreated check rows.
