Control of European Corn Borer in Field Corn, 1987

Corn was planted in 30-inch rows at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center near Beltsville, Md. Corn was planted on 9 May. Second- and third-instar larvae infested 95% of the corn, which was in the mid-whorl stage. Plots were 4 rows × 15 ft replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Sprays were broadcast on 17 Jun with a hand-held C02 backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 20 gal/acre at 40 psi. Granules were applied by shaker can on 16 Jun. On 13 and 14 Jul, 10 corn stalks were selected at random from the center 2 rows of each plot, cut open, and the number of borers or borer tunnels was recorded.
