Control of European Corn Borer in Field Corn, 1985

Test was conducted on a commercial field planted in 30 inch rows near Dawsonville in Montgomery County, Md. Corn was planted on 13 May. Second- and third-instar larvae infested 80% of the corn, which was in the midwhorl stage. Plots were 4 rows × 20 ft replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Sprays were broadcast on 27 Jun with a hand-held COa backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 20.4 gal/acre at 40 psi. Granules were applied by shaker can on the same day. On 17 and 18 Jul, 20 corn stalks were selected at random from the center 2 rows of each plot, cut open, and the number of borers or borer tunnels was recorded.
